Acupuncture
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture  originated in China where it was used as part of a holistic approach to  medicine and was concerned with creating a balance in the body’s  energy. Nowadays, the beneficial effects of acupuncture are supported by  scientific research and clinical evidence which show that acupuncture  can be an effective way to reduce pain and promote general well being.  It works by stimulating the brain and spinal cord to produce chemicals.  These chemicals, such as endorphins, melatonin and serotonin, can reduce  the perception of pain and promote sleep.

What will happen during my acupuncture session?
We  can provide therapists who are trained in the use of acupuncture and  are members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered  Physiotherapists. Single use, pre-sterilised disposable needles are  used to pierce the skin at the acupuncture point identified by your  therapist as being the most beneficial for the treatment of your  condition. The needles are left in position for approximately 20 minutes  before being removed and discarded.

It is important to stress that acupuncture is  but one of several methods which we use to reduce your pain and improve  your quality of life. It can be used alongside various physiotherapy  techniques to ensure that your condition is properly managed. Before you  start a course of treatment, our therapists will discuss with you which  methods of treatment are best suited to your condition and an optimal  rehabilitation plan can then be agreed.

Neuro Occupational Therapy
Why might I need occupational therapy?
Most of us take for granted those everyday  activities such as getting dressed, cooking, cleaning or caring for  children. But if you have been affected by head injury, or stroke or any  of the other conditions we treat, chances are you may have difficulty  with those same tasks which were once so easy. That is where our  occupational therapists come in.

What does an occupational therapist do?
The  role of an occupational therapist is to make your life easier and help  you to do the things that you want to do! They can advise you about  everyday activities such as cooking, cleaning or bathing. Or you might  want advice and assistance with more specialist activities such as  travelling, caring for children or coping in the workplace.

It may be that you need specialist equipment to  assist you with these tasks. This could be as simple as a ramp for a  wheelchair or a handrail for the stairs. Or maybe  more specialist  equipment such as a stair lift will be required. Whatever your needs,  our occupational therapists can advise you about the correct equipment  and how to get the maximum benefit from it.

How does it work?
The  process will start with an assessment of your needs. Your therapist  will then discuss with you what it is that you want to achieve and the  best way to work towards this. By engaging with you at all times your  therapist can ensure that your personal goals are right at the heart of  the treatment plan. Wherever possible we also like to involve your  friends or family members as our experience shows that their support is  crucial if you are to successfully achieve your goals.

Once it is agreed by all parties then your  therapist will advise and assist you in working through the plan. This  will usually take place in your home but it may be that specific advice  is necessary in your workplace. Your therapist will adopt a combination  of strategies and techniques to ensure that everything possible is done  to help you to reach your goals and achieve optimal rehabilitation.
